How I Learn English
Thanks to the progress I’ve made in learning English, I’d like to share some useful resources and talk about my learning plan.
Russian is my native language, which I speak fluently. I started learning English when I was 15 - almost 8 years ago. I remember learning it by watching The Simpsons and noting down and repeating new vocabulary. It was a rather inconvenient approach. After graduating from school at 18 and going to university, I stopped practising English, although I had reached a B2 level.
I’ve been using it from time to time since then, but I’ve forgotten a lot of vocabulary and grammar, and my reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills have deteriorated. Just a few months ago, I decided to close this gap by getting an international certificate. After doing some research, I chose the EF SET Certificate, due to its free and online format. I’ve found some useful resources and created a solid plan that I’d like to share, while also practising my writing.
There is a daily 1 hour learning English template below. First of all, there is a necessity to know your English level, using britishcouncil, cambridgeenglish or efset.
| Time | Skill | To do | Resource |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–15 min | Grammar | Learning grammar + 1 exercise | British Council / englishpage |
| 15–30 min | Vocabulary | Learn 10 words + write 5 sentences | Anki |
| 30–45 min | Skill (alternate) | Reading or Listening + exercise | BBC Learning English |
| 45–60 min | Practicing | Speaking (recording) or Writing | c.ai |
I also use an AI tool, such as Alice AI, as my tutor, and Obsidian for taking notes.
